Kerf Box Prototype 1, 8x2x1″, 2016. Laser cut and engraved baltic birch plywood.
My first experiment in 100% laser cut/engraved box-building utilized a prominent lattice hinge to create a smoothly curved outer surface that fits neatly in the hand, creating a slim, hard-sided pen case. I spent dozens of hours testing the engraving abilities of the laser to engrave to very specific depths and create invisible tabular-insert joints. I also used the engraving function to shape the thin lip on the sliding-insert lid.
